Questions
Which type should I use?
Code 128 for anything internal: inventory, shipping labels, document numbers. EAN-13 and EAN-8 for products sold in shops (UPC-A in North America). Code 39 for older systems and ID badges. ITF-14 for outer cartons and cases.
Can I use an EAN code for my own product?
The page draws any valid number, but numbers for products sold through shops are issued by GS1 (in Croatia, GS1 Hrvatska). A number made up here may already belong to someone else's product. For internal use, Code 128 avoids the problem.
What is the check digit?
The last digit of EAN, UPC and ITF-14 numbers, calculated from the others so a scanner can tell a misread from a real number. Enter one digit fewer and it is added; enter the whole number and it is checked.
Why are č, ć, đ, š and ž not accepted?
Code 128 and Code 39 are plain-ASCII barcodes, so those letters are not in them. If the text needs Croatian letters, a QR code holds them.
What size should it be printed at?
Keep the blank margin at both ends and print the bars at the same proportions. An EAN-13 is 37 mm wide at normal size and scanners read it from about 80% to 200% of that. Use SVG for print, since it scales without blur.
